ROSELANI ICE CREAM

Enjoy Roselani Ice Cream In 1932, Manuel Nobriga started making ice cream the old-fashioned way - from scratch. In addition to classics - like Vanilla and Chocolate - he created his own "island-style" flavors. Today, the company produces many of his original recipes, additional flavors perfected by his son Buddy Nobriga, and contemporary flavors from the imagination of Buddy's daughter, Catherine Nobriga Kim, who now runs the operation. Grandpa Manuel's original Haupia ice cream, incidentally, is still the company's best-seller.
Part of Maui Soda & Ice Works, Limited - Maui and Lana'i's Coca-Cola franchise bottler and distributor since 1924 - the ice cream division was named "Roselani" in 1970. The result of input from community groups, it is the "Americanization" of the Hawaiian word Lokelani which means "heavenly rose" and is Maui's official flower. It is displayed proudly on Roselani Ice Cream cartons. "It honors my grandfather's and my father's identity. A rose is the best you can give. It's the queen of perfection," says Cathy. Just like the ice cream. In addition to passing down their recipes, grandfather and father passed down their values. Everything must pass Cathy's muster and only perfect ice cream leaves the factory which stands in the same location as it did in Grandpa's day, albeit with a million dollars worth of modern equipment, part of a four million-dollar expansion in 1997. In addition to luscious ice cream, Roselani is recognized as an exceptional community citizen. You will surely find Roselani - and Coca-Cola - at every charitable event on the island from the Maui County Fair to high school bake sales and fundraisers.
